(TheConservativeTimes.org) – On November 1st, a 79-year-old retired postmaster was sentenced to 15 years in jail after admitting to the first-degree murder of his wife.
On May 2, Tarsame Singh believed his 77-year-old wife, Maya Devi, was having an affair. Singh was enraged. He took a rounders bat and beat Devi to death in Hornchurch, London.
After committing his crime, Singh made his way to the police station nearby. After he arrived, he told police officers what he had done, the location where the crime transpired, and where her body was still lying. He also gave emergency responders the keys to his house.
The prosecutor for the case, Abigail Husbands, said Singh went into his home around 4 p.m. and believed a man had been in the house that same day. Husbands said that Singh thought the alleged man was there to have an affair with his wife. As a result, he beat her to death with a rounders bat.
After the murder, Singh turned himself into custody and reported his crime. The prosecutor said emergency personnel found Singh’s wife on the living room floor with a sheet covering her body. Next to Devi, a wooden rolling pin and a rounders bat were discovered. An ambulance arrived at the scene, but it was already too late. First responders had already confirmed Devi’s death.
Husbands said that Devi lost two teeth during the attack. Her hands and legs sustained bruises, and her face was significantly injured.
The lead investigator, Mark Rogers, said the couple’s children were devastated. Rogers said no one expects to lose their family members this tragically. He said their community will support the children through their grief.
Nirmala Leal, a friend of Devi, said she enjoyed yoga and loved to sing. Leal said Devi was a sweet lady, and she always “had a smile for everyone.” Leal continued by saying she had recently visited Devi. She was in shock and could not believe she would never be able to see her again.
Singh must serve a minimum sentence of 15 years for his wife’s murder.
For over 50 years, Singh and his wife lived in the United Kingdom, but they originated from India. Before retiring, the couple operated a post office together for many years. They had three children.
