These messages create panic but often skip the careful details: exact elevations, official thresholds, and the difference between a worst-case model and the latest federal forecast. When fear drives clicks, nuance tends to vanish.

There is another problem. Many of the quoted “experts” pushing the most dramatic language come from advocacy groups like the Glen Canyon Institute, which openly supports draining Lake Powell and restoring Glen Canyon.

Their long-term goal may be sincere, but it also means they have a stake in framing every low-water year as proof that the lake is doomed. That does not make them wrong on the facts, but it should push any careful reader to check their claims against primary data, not just their sound bites.

What this means for power, people, and policy

Even stripped of spin, the hard numbers are sobering. Water levels just 35 feet above power cutoff. Capacity stuck around one quarter full. Inflows running at one third of normal.

A river that supports about 40 million people now lives on emergency rules, band-aid deals between states, and short-term federal orders. This is not how a stable system behaves. It is how a system looks when it has been over-promised for a century and then hit by a hotter, drier climate.

The lesson is plain. You cannot print water. You cannot regulate your way out of physics. States signed on to a Colorado River Compact that assumed more water than the river reliably provides, and for years leaders dodged the math. Now the bill is due.

The responsible answer is not endless crisis theater, nor is it wishful thinking that “nature will fix it.” It is honest accounting, real cuts, smarter storage, and policies that match what the river can actually deliver, not what we wish it could.
