(TheConservativeTimes.org) – Controversy over gender at the Olympics has continued as allegations that an Olympic boxer who won the women’s welterweight match has male chromosomes. This has sparked outrage across social media, news sources, and Americans who felt this was unfair.
Algerian boxer Imane Khelif defeated Italy’s Angela Carini after just forty six seconds in the ring. Carini said that a punch from Khalid “hurt too much” to continue the match. Khelif’s biological gender had already been a topic of discussion and debate for many people watching.
She is twenty-five years old and is one of two Olympic boxers that are competing this year who were disqualified in last year’s World Championships. Khelif and Lin Yu-Ting of Taiwan were both disqualified from the championships after officials stated they failed the gender eligibility tests.
“According to the results of the tests, it was proved that they have XY chromosomes. Such athletes were excluded from competition,” said the International Boxing Association President, Umar Kremlev.
Both of these boxers denied the allegations and were invited by the International Olympic Committee to compete after being deemed fit for competition.
“These two athletes were the victims of a sudden and arbitrary decision by the IBA. Towards the end of the IBA World Championships in 2023, they were suddenly disqualified without any due process,” the International Olympic Committee said.
The controversy continued for Khelif after the forty six second fight with Carini. Many have said that it’s not fair for her to compete in a competition against women, if she has the biology of a woman.
Even those who didn’t know the specifics of her case have said that it is unfair, especially in physical sports like boxing.
