Five students were killed in the shooting, and three students, as well as the Principal, were injured.

Police responded quickly to the shooting and brought in authorities. They found the shooter dead at the scene from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Mitch Mortvedt, the assistant director of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, told reporters that, “Officers immediately attempted to locate the source of the threat and quickly found what appeared to be the shooter with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

They also found a shotgun and handgun on him, as well as what they referred to as a “pretty rudimentary” explosive on the school property as well, which they were able to disable.

The shooter has been identified as 17-year-old Dylan Butler. No information has been given about a possible motive here, but his mother and two friends did say that Butler was a quiet boy who was bullied a lot.

Many people have given their thoughts and opinions on the shooting. I happened to be there today right after it happened, we canceled our event and converted it to a prayer & open conversation. “

Nikki Haley also posted on X saying, “No parent, student, or teacher should have to wake up and face news about a school shooting. My heart aches for the victims of Perry, Iowa and the entire community.”

Iowa’s current law does not require someone to get a permit before carrying a handgun in public, but rather a background check beforehand for anyone buying a handgun without a permit.

This is the fifth gun violence act in the United States so far this year according to the Gun Violence Archive.
