Artificial Intelligence is Shaping This Year’s Presidential Race

(TheConservativeTimes.org) – Experts have a pressing fear of how artificial intelligence will affect this year’s election, since it’s the first election since the boom of AI. They warned of many things that could be a side effect of AI in this presidential race, such as social media being flooded with deepfakes and realistic videos and images of the candidates.

However, instead of these fears, the things that experts have seen so far don’t quite compare – yet. Some examples of deepfakes include videos of former President Donald Trump riding a cat while holding an assault rifle and Kamala Harris in communist attire, with a mustache, so many seem to be unbelievable.

Although it’s not in the way that was expected and it may not be as serious as they fear, AI is still playing a major role in this year’s presidential race and creating issues.

Some of the things shared are meant to be funny, but they are being repurposed to tell a certain narrative and some have included false information and racist messaging.

Francesca Tripodi, an expert in online propaganda and sociologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, said that AI-made images are quite new.

Tripodi said, “The memes that are amplifying this claim are anything but humorous. When you have elected officials who are utilizing this imagery as a way of perpetuating racism and xenophobia, that’s a huge problem.”

Many Republicans have defended the artificial intelligence generated content, taking it as light-hearted jokes, which is reflective of Trump’s personality, but Democrats have been more likely to point out the dangers and fears surrounding how this technology is being used, especially in this election.
