(TheConservativeTimes.org) – Brazil is blocking Elon Musk’s social media platform X, making it inaccessible on the web and through mobile apps. This action was taken because Elon Musk refused to name a legal representative to Brazil that they were looking into.
This has ended a month-long feud between Elon Musk and the Brazilian Supreme Court justice over free speech, misinformation, and far-right accounts. Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered the ban on X; Brazil’s telecommunications regulator, Anatoly, told internet service providers to suspend users’ access to X.
De Moraes warned Musk saying that X could be blocked from Brazil if he didn’t comply with his order to name the representative within twenty four hours.
Wrote de Moraes, “Elon Musk showed his total disrespect for Brazilian sovereignty and, in particular, for the judiciary, setting himself up as a true supranational entity and immune to the laws of each country.”
They say that the platform will be suspended until it complies with his orders, and it will set a daily fine for VPNs that are trying to access it.
Brazil is one of the largest markets for X; a market research group states that X has over forty million Brazilians, or one fifth of the population, that access X at least once per month.
Linda Yaccarino, X’s CEO, said, “This is a sad day for X users around the world, especially those in Brazil, who are being denied access to our platform. I wish it did not have to come to this – it breaks my heart.”
According to X’s official Global Government Affairs page, they expected to be banned in Brazil “simply because we would not comply with his illegal orders to censor his political opponents.”
X continued to say that when they tried defending themselves in court, that this is when De Moraes threatened to suspend their access in Brazil. X has clashed heavily with de Moraes for his request to block users.
