(TheConservativeTimes.org) – The Canadian government has completed negotiations with the United States that would allow the use of U.S. space launch technology, data, and expertise for launches in Canada.
The agreement hasn’t been signed just yet, but it would establish legal and technical safeguards needed, while ensuring the proper handling of sensitive technology.
Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said, “Canada’s vibrant and growing commercial space launch industry relies on its ability to collaborate across borders. The conclusion of negotiations between Canada and the United States means that we are one step closer to finalizing this agreement, which, when in force, will position our country to be a global leader in commercial space launch.”
The company Maritime Launch Services is developing Canada’s first commercial spaceport in Nova Scotia. They have stated that this agreement is a major step forward for the industry.
President and CEO Stephen Matier said, “We look forward to welcoming our American clients to Nova Scotia in the coming months as we prepare for Canada’s first orbital launch from Spaceport Nova Scotia in 2026.”
A release stated that the federal government is in the process of modernizing the regulatory framework around commercial space launch as the industry is seeing rapid growth.
Canada hopes to see itself as the future leaders in commercial space launches as the country has geographical advantages that would be beneficial for them. This agreement with the United States would help Canada to become a prominent force in the commercial space area.
