Chinese Leader Xi Meets With U.S. National Security Advisor

(TheConservativeTimes.org) – Chinese leader Xi Jinping is meeting with U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan on a three-day visit to keep communications open amid an increasingly intensifying relationship.

Sullivan met with Wang Yi, China’s foreign ministers, as well as a top general from the Central Military Commission. Tensions have risen because both countries have been at odds over various issues, including the South China Sea, global security, and now industrial policies on electric vehicle manufacturing. Sullivan is visiting this week to keep tensions from spiraling out of control and causing more conflict.

“We believe that competition with China does not have to lead to conflict or confrontation. The key is responsible management through diplomacy,” he said.

Both governments are on the same page in regard to keeping relations stable and free of tension, especially as the United States enters the upcoming presidential election. Both sides have said that they are committed to managing and maintaining the relationship.

Chinese President Xi said, “While great changes have taken place in the two countries and in China-U.S. relations, China’s commitment to the goal of a stable, healthy and sustainable China-U.S. relationship remains unchanged.”

Sullivan stated, ”President Biden is committed to responsibly managing this consequential relationship to ensure that competition does not veer into conflict or confrontation, and to work together where our interests align.”

They have agreed to work toward a phone call together between Xi and Biden. Sullivan also indicated that they could have an in person meeting at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation.
