(TheConservativeTimes.org) – Framing his unhinged demand as a direct attack on President Donald Trump, an entitled French leftist has called for America’s return of the Statue of Liberty to France.
French MEP Raphaël Glucksmann is demanding the US send back the Statue of Liberty, claiming America has betrayed the values it represents.
The liberal politician’s attack comes as part of broader criticism aimed at President Trump’s America First policies.
Glucksmann, co-founder of the left-wing political movement Place Publique, launched his attack during a political rally in Paris.
He is a known critic of President Trump’s policy changes and has not shied away from criticizing American leadership.
The French politician boldly stated that Lady Liberty should be returned to France, a stunning demand considering the statue has stood as an American icon for nearly 140 years.
“We gave it to you as a gift, but apparently you despise it. So it will be just fine here at home,” Glucksmann said.
Standing 305 feet tall and weighing approximately 450,000 pounds, the statue was originally unveiled in 1886 as a gift from the people of France to celebrate American independence and friendship between the two nations.
Glucksmann’s comments reveal the contempt many European leftists hold for American sovereignty.
While attacking America’s policies, he conveniently overlooks France’s own problems with civil unrest, anti-Semitism, and economic stagnation.
“We’re going to say to the Americans who have chosen to side with the tyrants, to the Americans who fired researchers for demanding scientific freedom: ‘Give us back the Statue of Liberty,'” Glucksmann said.
The audacity of Glucksmann’s demand is especially striking given that a smaller replica of the Statue of Liberty already exists in Paris on the Seine River as a gift from America to France in 1889.
His comments appear to be less about any genuine concern for what the statue represents and more about attacking President Trump’s administration and policies.
Glucksmann went further in his criticism, claiming that the Trump administration has adopted “Putin’s strategic and ideological approach” and spreads “Moscow’s fake news.”
These accusations follow the typical leftist playbook of attacking President Trump with Russia-related smears that have been repeatedly debunked over the years.
While lecturing America about freedom and liberty, France has experienced years of riots in immigrant neighborhoods and growing anti-immigrant sentiment among its own citizenry.
Glucksmann also criticized leaders in France for supporting President Trump, showing motivation for partisan politics rather than any genuine concern for liberty and freedom.
His demand for the return of Lady Liberty appears to be nothing more than a publicity stunt designed to gain attention for his struggling left-wing movement.
As for America, it has been and remains the world’s greatest symbol of freedom and opportunity.
