Elon Musk Shuts Down San Francisco Flagship Headquarters

Elon Musk is closing down the main San Francisco office that X has occupied since 2011, and he is relocating the headquarters to Austin, Texas.

Elon Musk said that he had “no choice” but to move his flagship location out of California. In a recent tweet, Musk stated, “It is impossible to operate in San Francisco if you’re processing payments.” He continued, “That’s why Stripe, Block, and others had to move.”

Musk first stated that he would be moving the headquarters out of California last month, saying originally that it was because of a new California law that would ban school districts from requiring staff to disclose information related to students sexual orientation or gender identity.

This is the main reason why he is moving SpaceX out of California as well. An email to employees stated that Bay Area employees would be relocated to an existing office in San Jose or a new location in Palo Alto.

Said Linda Yaccarino, the Chief Executive, “This is an important decision that impacts many of you, but it is the right one for our company in the long term.”

Musk has had great relationships with the states where his businesses have been located. He originally was very supportive of California and felt proud to have his business there, but this has clearly changed.

San Francisco has been a city that’s been home to multiple tech companies and Musk relocating X is a huge blow to the city and what it stood for.
