Hackers Have Stolen 3 Billion People’s Social Security Numbers in Huge Breach

(TheConservativeTimes.org) – A new lawsuit is claiming that hackers have stolen access to personal information from “billions of individuals,” such as their Social Security numbers, in a massive security breach. Personal data such as social security numbers, addresses, family member names, and more has been stolen.

Christopher Hofmann, a California resident said that he was alerted that his personal information had been stolen and leaked on the dark web by the “nationalpublicdata.com” breach. Bloomberg Law later spoke out about this lawsuit.

The breach happened in April of this year and was done by a hacker group called the USDoD and they stole this information from a background check company called the National Public Data. A hacker leaked a version of the NPD data that was stolen for free on a hacking forum.

Steinhauer, director of information security and engagement at The National Cybersecurity Alliance, stated that likely “everyone with a Social Security number was impacted.”

“It’s a reminder of the importance of protecting yourself because clearly companies and the government aren’t doing it for us,” Steinhauer continued.

NPD said the breach was due to a “third-party bad actor that was trying to hack into data in late December last year, with potential leaks of certain data in April and summer this year.”

According to a lawsuit, the USDoD posted a database called “National Public Data” on the dark web and posted an asking price of three and a half million dollars for it.

It’s unknown the exact number of people who have been impacted, but the lawsuit states that it was “billions.” Just for reference, the population of the United States sits at three hundred and thirty million people. However, the lawsuit states that they also have information from deceased individuals as well.
