(TheConservativeTimes.org) – Kamala Harris and Donald Trump clashed during their first presidential debate when talking about China’s policy. In Harris’ first statements, she immediately started talking about Trump’s tariff policy, which includes a blanket tax of ten or twenty percent.
“My opponent has a plan that I call the ‘Trump sales tax,’ which would be a twenty percent tax on everyday goods that you rely on to get through the month,” she said. She also continued to say that this policy would hit mostly middle-class families.
The former president continued to defend his tax proposals in response. “Other countries are going to finally, after seventy-five years, pay us back for all that we’ve done for the world, and the tariff will be substantial,” he said.
In a pushback to Harris, Trump stated that Joe Biden and the Vice President kept those tariffs. He said, “If she doesn’t like them, they should have gone out and they should have immediately cut the tariffs.” Trump continued, “They never took the tariff off, because it was so much money. They can’t, it would totally destroy everything that they’ve set out to do.”
Economists do agree that raised tariffs often raise prices which would affect many Americans, especially lower and middle class families. Trump tried to reassure that American consumers wouldn’t be paying for the increased tariffs.
He said, “What’s going to happen and who’s going to have higher prices is China and all of the countries that have been ripping us off for years.”
Harris claimed that Trump hadn’t been hard enough on China during his term, saying, “Let’s be clear that the Trump administration resulted in a trade deficit, one of the highest we’ve ever seen in the history of America.”
Harris said, “Under Donald Trump’s presidency, he ended up selling American chips to China to help them improve and modernize their military.” She added, ″He basically sold us out when a policy about China should be in making sure the United States of America wins the competition for the 21st century.”
