Harris vs Trump: What it Means for China

(TheConservativeTimes.org) – When it comes to the United States election, many countries are tuning in to see what exactly will happen and its effect on the international landscape. In China’s case, trade ties with the United States will remain tense no matter who wins the election, according to senior economist at Swiss Private Bank UBP, Carlos Casanova.

These views have been agreed upon by many other leaders as they’ve said that regardless of who wins, Republican or Democrat, both nominees are expected to be hard on China. Donald Trump has personally proposed one hundred percent tariffs on Chinese goods as well as a blanket tariff of ten to twenty percent on all other imports. Kamala Harris has said that she most likely will continue with Joe Biden’s tariff policy on China.

Eswar Prasad, an economics professor at Cornell University, said, “A Trump victory is highly likely to increase trade and economic hostilities between the U.S. and China, ramping up the trade and financial decoupling between the two countries.”

During the debate, Harris didn’t give details on what her policy with China would be, but she did say that a “policy about China should be in making sure the United States of America wins the competition for the 21st century.”

“Which means focusing on the details of what that requires, focusing on relationships with our allies, focusing on investing in American based technology so that we win the race on A.I. and quantum computing,” she continued.

The United States has continued to warn about China’s overcapacity issues. Janet Yellen, Treasury Secretary, said that American and European firms are threatened by China’s excess industrial capacity.

“We think that ongoing trade tensions, both with the U.S. and Europe, are here to stay. I think in the U.S. it’s well understood, the support for more stern actions against China is bipartisan. So it doesn’t matter who wins the election,” Casanova stated.
