Harvard President Steps Down After Anti-Semitism Controversy?!

Cambridge, MA, USA - June 20, 2018: The historic architecture of the iconic Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.

(TheConservativeTimes.org) – Recently, there has been uproar regarding the Harvard University President, Claudine Gay, after she very awkwardly answered a question posed to her regarding antisemitism on campus.

Claudine Gay was among three different college presidents who were invited to speak and answer questions after large Universities were accused of not protecting their Jewish students on campus.

A New York Republican representative asked Claudine Gay whether or not “calling for the genocide of Jews” would go against their code of conduct. Gay responded by saying that it depends on the context and if the “speech crosses into conduct, that violates our policies.”

After her answer to this question, many people stepped up to ask for her resignation from Harvard. More than 70 lawmakers asked for her resignation, but more than 700 faculty members signed a document in support of Gay, despite what she said.

After the hearing, Gay’s career was under the spotlight as conservative activists dove into her past. They found many points in her doctoral dissertation where plagiarism was present, which pushed her supporters further away.

Claudine Gay announced that she was stepping down as President of Harvard following the request for her resignation. “It is with a heavy heart but a deep love for Harvard that I write to share that I will be stepping down as president,” she said.

She continued to say how “it has been distressing” to have people doubt her commitment to her students and to have threats aimed at her following this interview. She later apologized and spoke about what she should have said instead when asked the question about antisemitism.

She said, “What I should have had the presence of mind to do in that moment was return to my guiding truth, which is that calls for violence against our Jewish community or threats to our Jewish students, have no place at Harvard, and will never go unchallenged.”

Scrutiny over colleges not upholding standards or keeping their students in their best interest continues as many are speaking out against antisemitism on college campuses.
