Hong Kong Immigrant First Non-US Citizen for Election Commission

(TheConservativeTimes.org) – A Hong Kong immigrant, who can’t even vote legally in the United States, has recently been sworn into San Francisco’s Elections Committee.

Kelly Wong, a Hong Kong immigrant, “is believed to be the first noncitizen appointed to the commission.” It’s now possible in San Francisco after they passed a law in 2020 that took being a citizen off the requirements. Kelly Wong is an immigrant who came to the United States in 2019 to pursue a graduate degree and she was sworn in at a Ceremony in San Francisco City Hall.

Kelly Wong was unanimously voted in by San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors. She spoke out about how she overcame doubt to be voted onto the elections committee. “There are always voices inside my head. Like, ‘You can’t do it. You’re not competent. You’re an immigrant. This is not your country.’ That’s not true. If I can do it, you can do it,” she said.

The Board of Supervisors president Aaron Peskin said, “I’m very impressed by her commitment to enfranchising people who rarely vote, to educating people about the voting process, and to bring in noncitizens and get them the tools they need as they become citizens.”

Kelly Wong has had a strong passion for helping those who need it by understanding voting rights, participating in political conversations, and walking them through how to vote properly.

Wong said, “I’ve seen how language and cultural barriers prevent immigrants with limited English proficiency from fully exercising their right to vote. Even though I’m fluent in English, I still encounter challenges in navigating a new system, let alone participating in political conversation and activities.”

The San Francisco Election Commission President Robin Stone said “I support the Board of Supervisors’ authority and decision to appoint Kelly Wong to the Elections Commission. What’s more, as public officers of the City, we respect the law and will of San Francisco voters, who removed the citizenship requirement for commissioners in 2020.”
