Hundreds of Places in U.S. Say Racism is Public Health Crisis

(TheConservativeTimes.org) – Over two hundred cities across the United States declared racism a public health crisis, which mostly came to fruition after the murder of George Floyd.

Many have said that the protests and overall attention that the topic was getting to address these issues made them feel heard. Ryan McClinton, who works at a nonprofit, said that this “might be us finally breaking through that noise that they haven’t been willing to hear.”

Marsha Guthrie, the senior director at the Government Alliance on Race and Equity, said, “Think about the decades and decades of just fighting to get the conversation about race even centered in the American psyche,” she said. “Now people talk about it as a general course of fact.”

These declarations were a very important first step to creating a society that is racially equitable. Research shows that racism can affect the health of someone including issues like anxiety, higher chances of getting asthma and heart disease, and chronic stress.

Statistics show that both adults and children that are people of color have a higher death rate. They also show that Black, Asian, and Hispanic women were more likely to die than white women during childbirth. It also said that black infants have a higher death rate compared to any other race.

Years ago, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention put up millions of dollars in grants for local and state health departments in order to address these racial disparities. In places like Sacramento, California there was a push to create a workforce and branch that would tackle the health crisis.

One country board member who pushed forth a declaration, Phil Serna, said, “I think in many respects dealing with racism, addressing racism responsibly, is kind of like painting the Golden Gate Bridge, right?” Serna continued, “As soon as you think you’re done, you’re not. You have to go back and start painting again.”
