Judge Rules Google Has Illegal Monopoly Over Internet Search

(TheConservativeTimes.org) – A United States judge has ruled that Google spent billions of dollars to create an illegal monopoly for its search engine. Google has been in a lawsuit due to an investigation that revealed it was exploiting its dominance with its internet search engine.

United States authorities have been taking on Big Tech, and this is a breakthrough in the case as it is said that Google broke antitrust laws. US District Judge Amit Mehta wrote almost a three-hundred-page ruling regarding Google’s breaking of the laws.

Judge Amir Mehta said, “The court reaches the following conclusion: Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly.” The ruling found that Google’s dominance in the space proved its monopoly.

US Attorney General Merrick Garland said that this was a “historic win for the American people” and he added that “no company, no matter how large or influential, is above the law.”

Google, and its parent company Alphabet, are now facing a huge setback following the ruling. The company had argued that its popularity simply stemmed from internet users wanting to use a search engine that had become synonymous.

Kent Walker, Google’s global affairs president, said that the company would appeal the ruling after Mehta said Google was the industry’s best search engine. Walker said, “Given this, and that people are increasingly looking for information in more and more ways, we plan to appeal.”

The ruling has opened up the way for another trial that would determine potential remedies and next steps for the business. This could possibly lead to a breakup of Alphabet and change Google advertising completely.
