LATEST: Huge Search for Daughter; Father Found Dead

Yellow sign with latest news text against sky

In a stunning development, a father’s tragic death on Maine’s rugged Mount Katahdin has sparked a massive search operation for his missing daughter.

The body of 58-year-old Tim Keiderling was discovered near the summit, while his 28-year-old daughter Esther remains unaccounted for.

The pair, from Ulster Park, New York, began their hiking adventure at Maine’s highest peak. They were last spotted on the Katahdin Tablelands before disappearing.

When neither returned, authorities located their vehicle in the day-use parking lot, triggering search efforts.

A K9 team made the grim discovery of Tim’s body near the summit, so the search for Esther has intensified.

Over 30 game wardens, multiple K9 teams, and several helicopters are now scouring the rugged terrain in hopes of finding her alive.

Mount Katahdin stands 5,269 feet tall and is notorious for its challenging trails. Park officials describe it as “a very strenuous climb, no matter which trailhead you choose.”

The average hiker requires eight to twelve hours to complete the round trip, making it a formidable challenge even for experienced outdoor enthusiasts.

Weather conditions during the weekend hike were challenging but not extreme, with temperatures in the 50s accompanied by sporadic rain and wind.

While not severe, these conditions can quickly become dangerous on exposed mountain terrain where shelter options are limited and temperatures can drop rapidly.

Baxter State Park closed both the Hunt and Abol Trails to aid in the search operation.

The Maine Army National Guard has joined the effort, providing a Blackhawk helicopter equipped with infrared imaging technology to detect any heat signatures in the wilderness that might indicate Esther’s location.

“We know that many of our social media followers share in our deep sadness for the family and friends of Tim Keiderling, and appreciate your support as teams continue the search for Esther,” Baxter State Park officials stated.

Authorities are urging anyone who was on or near Katahdin’s summit to contact Houlton State Police.

Even the smallest piece of information could prove crucial in locating Esther as precious time continues to pass.

Many outdoor enthusiasts continue to pray for Esther’s safe return as search teams work tirelessly against the clock in Maine’s rugged backcountry.
