Microsoft Holding Cybersecurity Event in September to Discuss Changes

(VitalNews.org) –Microsoft has said that they will hold a conference next month for cybersecurity firms to discuss different ways companies can be better. This comes as a response to the faulty CrowdStrike software update that caused millions of Windows computers to crash.

This particular crash sent millions of systems into chaos and affected businesses like restaurants, banks, hospitals, and airports. This created substantial issues and cost money for many of the companies affected. Delta Airlines spoke out saying that the outage cost them half a billion dollars, and they’re currently seeking damages from CrowdStrike and Microsoft.

Microsoft plans to meet with cybersecurity companies, including CrowdStrike, in Washington to speak about how they can prevent issues like this in the future.

A Microsoft executive stated that they will look to change the mode of their software to user mode instead of kernel mode. Many of these softwares rely on kernel mode to protect the device, but user mode applications are isolated.

This means that if one crashes, it won’t affect any others, whereas for kernel mode if an application crashes, it can make the whole system crash. Apple has warned against kernel access and has limited it on macOS; they even discourage developers from using kernel extensions.

During this recent crash, the update of the software caused crashes at operating system level, and it even caused people to have the “blue screen of death.”

Microsoft ensures that no companies will experience preferential treatment as they seek to resolve the future issues of cybersecurity.

“We will share further updates on these conversations following the event,” Microsoft Corporate Vice President Aidan Marcuss said.
