(TheConservativeTimes.org) – Outgoing Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has launched a savage attack on the MAGA movement and GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump.
Specifically, McConnell claims the movement is “damaging” the GOP and driving it away from its core principles.
Revealed in a new biography by Associated Press journalist Michael Tackett, McConnell’s comments paint a picture of a party at war with itself.
Once a staunch Trump ally, the senator from Kentucky now claims that the former president has changed the Republican Party at its core, shifting it away from Ronald Reagan’s vision.
“I think Trump was the biggest factor in changing the Republican Party from what Ronald Reagan viewed and he wouldn’t recognize today,” McConnell stated.
McConnell’s criticism extends beyond Trump to the very heart of the MAGA movement.
“Trump is appealing to people who haven’t been as successful as other people and providing an excuse for that, that these more successful people have somehow…cheated and you don’t deserve to think of yourself as less successful because things haven’t been fair,” Mitch McConnell stated.
Additionally, McConnell laments that “about half of the Republicans in the country believe whatever he [Trump] says.”
McConnell also criticized the January 6 Capitol protests, which he describes as evidence that Trump is unfit for office.
Despite now claiming that Trump is “erratic,” McConnell voted to acquit Trump in his second impeachment trial.
The biography also reveals that “McConnell describes Trump as a ‘sleazeball,’ a ‘narcissist,’ and ‘stupid,’ while condemning the rioters as ‘narcissistic’ like Trump.”
As McConnell prepares to step down from his leadership role, his parting shots at Trump and the MAGA movement reveal the deep divide within the Republican Party.
