(TheConservativeTimes.org) – Google is the main company that determines which ads you get and how much an advertiser gets paid to pop up on your screen.
The Justice Department and a coalition of states have said that Google’s dominance over the technology that controls the sales of billions of ads everyday is an illegal monopoly that should be broken.
There is a trial planned in Virginia that will determine whether or not Google’s ad tech stack is an illegal monopoly; the trial will involve a look into Google’s products to see how they work together to help place ads in front of consumers.
Online advertising is a huge way that businesses are getting their brands in front of people and it’s especially exploded in popularity over the last few years. These ads are called “targeted ads,” and they will usually be made specifically to you, such as an ad for real estate if you’ve been searching for a new home.
Google has said that they’ve invested billions to improve the quality of ads and to ensure that advertisers can reach the consumers they are looking for.
The Justice Department has said that Google rigged the automated auctions of ad sales in favor of itself. It also said that the publishing industry was cheated out of hundreds of millions of dollars that they would have received if the auctions were actually competitive.
The government has looked into the details of how these ads are operated to find if Google can rig the system to favor its own advertising. They also found that the competition of their own ads was put in their favor and didn’t allow others a chance to advertise.
