(TheConservativeTimes.org) – Officials in Massachusetts have issued warnings about mosquitoes that are carrying the eastern equine encephalitis, or EEE. Public health experts have been concerned that these Mosquito-borne viruses could be more common in the United States due to the current climate crisis.
Some Massachusetts residents have pushed back as they are worried about COVID-like restrictions being put in place. There is already a restriction in some areas for being in an outdoor field at night, which has prompted backlash.
Jennifer Voas, a resident of Oxford, Massachusetts, said, “This fall season is so important because we are coming off of Covid restrictions and everyone not being able to play and participate, and finally feeling safe enough to be together in large crowds.”
She continued, ”It was very important that we could work with the town to maintain safety of all of our participants and our spectators and our parents, while also trying to maintain a season.”
Spread through mosquito bites, EEE is a rare virus, and in the U.S., it’s more common in the eastern and Gulf coasts. It’s said that thirty percent of people who contract the virus die, and survivors often face serious issues.
There is no vaccine for this virus, and so they are relying on just controlling and monitoring the mosquitos, using pesticide, and putting out restrictions for high mosquito activity times.
So far, in Massachusetts, there were twelve cases of EEE and six deaths in 2019, which was the last outbreak of this virus. According to CNN, there are restrictions currently where public spaces are closed from dusk to dawn to keep people inside.
