(TheConservativeTimes.org) – There has been an increase in concern regarding the plastics industries and fossil fuel industry for their deception about recycling, and many voters are speaking out. According to a new poll, the majority of American voters support legal efforts to hold these sectors accountable.
The industries have faced backlash due to their part in the global plastics pollution crisis. In California, dozens of lawsuits have been filed over the last ten years against brands that sell plastics. There has been research published that says these plastic producers have known that plastic recycling is too expensive and complicated to become a waste management solution, but they decided to promote it to the public anyway.
There has been a push for legal action to be taken on the industry, but there have not been any legal steps taken just yet. The Guardian’s new polling data has said that seventy percent of American voters would support litigation against them, including the majority of Republicans.
A survey was done on over one thousand American voters, and they were asked to gauge their worry about plastic waste in waterways. Over sixty percent of them said that they were “very concerned” and a majority of them also indicated some level of worry about the plastic litter in their communities.
The poll also looked at the “chasing arrows” symbol which has been used since the eighties, but it’s not always put on recyclable materials. Over sixty percent of voters said that putting this symbol on plastics that aren’t recyclable was deceptive. They also stated that even if the plastic is recyclable but not usually recycled, then it is deceptive as well.
The poll comes after the Environmental Protection Agency said that the chasing arrows symbol was “deceptive,” leading to pushback against these industries. As a result, the Federal Trade Commission is working to refine how industries are allowed to use the term “recyclable” in accordance with its Green Guide documents.
