(TheConservativeTimes.org) – Two victims’ families have stated their intention to seek capital punishment for the alleged killer of four people at the University of Idaho.
Brian Kohberger is accused of murdering Maddie Mogen, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; Kaylee Goncalves, 21; and Ethan Chapin, 20. Kohberger’s parents made a statement early this year saying they “care deeply” for the families of the murdered youngsters.
The families of Kaylee Goncalves and Maddie Mogen, who were discovered dead in a bed next to one other, agree that the death sentence should be applied here.
Attorney Shanon Gray said on behalf of the Goncalves family that they spoke with the prosecutor on the case, M. Thompson, and he will meet with all the families. He claims a decision would be made based on that meeting.
When the judge asked for Kohlbergers’s plea, he reportedly stood motionless, so the judge pleaded not guilty on his behalf. The prosecution has 60 days from the time pleas are entered to decide whether or not to seek the death sentence.
The trial is set to begin on October 2, and he is still being held at Latah County Jail.
The Kohlberger family released a statement saying that they plan on letting the legal process transpire and, as a family, they will love and support Brian.
On the morning of November 13, Kohlberger allegedly broke into the off-campus Moscow, Idaho home where the four students were staying and murdered them. After the murders, blood was spotted trickling down the building’s walls.
Before last year’s November 13th murders, Moscow had gone seven years without a single homicide.
According to the non-profit Death Penalty Information Center, Idaho became the sixth state this year to approve a firing squad as a means of execution if lethal injection drugs were unavailable.
Five days after a death warrant is obtained, the head of the Idaho Department of Correction must decide whether or not lethal injection can be used. According to the facility’s website, a firing squad will be used if lethal injection and the electric chair are deemed unusable.
