(TheConservativeTimes.org) – In a shocking turn of events, the New York Jets have fired head coach Robert Saleh, the NFL’s first American Muslim head coach, amid allegations of discrimination and “apparent hostility.”
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is now demanding answers from the Jets about potential bias against Saleh due to his faith and ethnicity.
The firing comes after a disappointing 2-3 start to the season, but the manner in which Saleh was dismissed has raised eyebrows.
According to reports, Saleh was escorted out of the team facility by security without being allowed to speak to his players, an act that CAIR describes as “apparent hostility.”
Adding fuel to the fire, Saleh had recently worn a Lebanese flag pin during an NFL game, drawing attention amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell stated, “Given Coach Saleh’s groundbreaking role as the first Muslim head coach in NFL history, as well as the broader context of rising anti-Muslim bigotry, we urge the Jets to explain why Coach Saleh was treated with such apparent hostility.”
Jets owner Woody Johnson has previously been accused of making racially charged remarks.
CAIR’s recent civil rights report documented a staggering 69% increase in bias complaints from January to June 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.
The team’s offense ranked 25th in the NFL in points scored this season, so the Jets cite poor performance as the reason for Saleh’s firing.
Democrat Rep. Jamaal Bowman criticized the firing, balming the team’s issues on quarterback Aaron Rodgers, offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and the front office rather than Saleh’s coaching.
The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee has praised Saleh’s achievements and potential for future success and highlighted the impact of his representation in the league.
The NFL now finds itself at the center of another controversy that critics say will expose deep-seated biases within the league.
