(TheConservativeTimes.org) – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved an updated version of the COVID vaccine from Moderna and Pfizer for the new season.
Both mRNA vaccines, Comirnaty and Spikevax, are approved for people twelve years and older. Moderna’s COVID vaccine and Pfizer’s BioNTech COVID vaccines are able to be used with emergency authorization for children six months to eleven years.
These vaccines are designed to target the Omicron variant KP.2 strain of the COVID virus.
Said the FDA, “These vaccines were updated to provide better protection against COVID-19 caused by circulating variants.”
Director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, Peter Marks, said, “Vaccination continues to be the cornerstone of COVID-19 prevention.” He continued, “These updated vaccines meet the agency’s rigorous scientific standards for safety, effectiveness and manufacturing quality.”
Marks also said due to the success in immunity of previous vaccines, that they recommend those who are already vaccinated to get the plated COVID vaccine as well. This could help with better protection against different variants.
Dr. Marc Siegel, Senior Medical Analyst for Fox News said that these vaccines are especially helpful for those in high risk age groups.
Siegel also stated that although the side effects of these vaccines have been publicized, the risks of the virus are much greater than any side effects from the vaccine.
There has been a wave of certain COVID subvariants which are covered in the updated vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control stated that eighteen percent of COVID tests were coming back positive. The percentage of deaths related to COVID went up to almost two percent compared to the previous week when it was at around one and a half percent.
