North Korea Partially Opens Doors for Tourism Post-Pandemic

(TheConservativeTimes.org) – North Korea is going to reopen for tourism later this year after being closed off since the beginning of 2020. During the early stages of COVID-119, North Korea closed its borders and didn’t allow any tourism to enter their country.

Koryo Tours, in Beijing, said that tours in North Korea would be resuming in December of this year. “Having waited for over four years to make this announcement, Koryo Tours is very excited about the opening of North Korean tourism once again,” they said.

The tourism company stated that there had been signs the country was pivoting back to accepting tourism since the middle of last year. However, they still won’t be opening up completely.

Koryo Tours stated, “The opening will start in Samjiyon City.” They continued, “Whilst this may seem unusual, it is the main area for tourism in North Korea during the winter time. For those hoping to visit on one of the sooner tours, we would like to emphasize that things may be a little more chaotic than usual.”

They stated that Samjiyon was a popular destination prior to the borders being closed, but that they have been working on the area to get it up to tourist standards.

The official itinerary dates will be announced in the next few weeks as they finalize the specifics of the tours. Koryo Tours said that they aren’t sure what this means for broader tourism in the country, but that this will start things off in the country after four years of having tourism shut down.
