(TheConservativeTimes.org) – Marking the end of an era in U.S. gymnastics, legendary gymnastics coach Bela Karolyi has died at 82.

Karolyi shaped American champions and left behind a complex legacy of Olympic glory and controversial training methods that divided the sport.

Both Karolyi and his wife Martha defected from communist Romania to the United States in 1981.

They brought with them a strict, no-nonsense approach that transformed American gymnastics.

Their arrival spurred a surge in U.S. dominance in the sport as they molded multiple Olympic gold medalists and world champions.

The Karolyis’ impact on American gymnastics cannot be overstated. They were key in guiding Mary Lou Retton to the Olympic all-around title in 1984, a crucial moment that inspired a generation of young gymnasts.

Their most outstanding achievement came in 1996, when they led the “Magnificent Seven” to team gold at the Atlanta Olympics, cementing America’s place at the top of the gymnastics world.

Karolyi’s coaching style was as famous as it was controversial. His booming voice and “You can do it!” catchphrase became synonymous with U.S. gymnastics success.

However, his methods drew criticism from some former gymnasts and coaches who claimed his intense approach crossed the line into abusive behavior.

The Karolyis’ legacy was further marked by the Larry Nassar scandal, which rocked USA Gymnastics to its core.

Former gymnasts accused the couple of fostering a culture that allowed Nassar’s abuse to go unchecked at their Texas ranch, which served as the national team training center.

The Karolyis denied any knowledge of Nassar’s crimes, but the scandal caused USA Gymnastics to sever ties with them in 2018.

Despite the controversy surrounding his later years, Bela Karolyi’s impact on American gymnastics is undeniable.

He helped transform the United States from an also-ran into a global powerhouse, producing a string of Olympic champions and inspiring countless young athletes to pursue their dreams.
