(TheConservativeTimes.org) – Backed by the outstanding mandate Republicans received from the American people, Senator Rand Paul warned Denver Mayor Mike Johnston he would face consequences for resisting federal immigration laws.
Watch the video down below.
The Kentucky Republican’s comments highlight the growing conflict between liberal sanctuary cities and the incoming Trump administration’s deportation plans.
As tensions rise, Paul suggests that defiance could end in Johnston’s removal from office.
Paul’s remarks come as Johnston vowed to firmly oppose President-elect Donald Trump’s mass deportation agenda in order to protect illegals in Denver.
The senator reminded Johnston that federal laws must be followed, suggesting that the issue could reach the Supreme Court if local officials continue to obstruct federal immigration initiatives.
Johnston initially declared he would use local police to block federal deportations but later flip-flopped to suggest that local citizens would resist instead.
Paul warned that Johnston’s actions could potentially lead to serious legal consequences. “Resisting federal law is a form of insurrection,” Paul asserted.
The battle between Denver and the federal government is set to intensify with Trump’s appointment of Tom Homan as border czar.
Known for his hardline stance on immigration, Homan has threatened to arrest non-compliant leaders. In response, Johnston claimed the threat did not intimidate him.
While Paul supports Trump’s focus on deporting criminal aliens, he opposes using the military for deportations, calling it a “huge mistake.”
As sanctuary cities like Denver think about resisting federal mandates, the stage is set for a showdown that could redefine the balance of power between local and federal authorities.
