RNC Announces 2nd Debate Moderators

(TheConservativeTimes.org) – The Republican National Committee (RNC) has determined that the September presidential primary debate will be on FOX Business and Univision, hosted by Stuart Varney, Dana Perino, and Ilia Calderón at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. FOX News hosted the first Republican primary debate.

However, former President Donald Trump, the Republican frontrunner, opted for an interview with former FOX anchor Tucker Carlson on Twitter over the broadcast debate. Trump signaled that he would not participate in the GOP primary debates, viewing them as an audition for a potential vice-presidential pick and unnecessary with the size of his lead in the polls.

Following the first debate, according to FiveThirtyEight aggregate polling, Trump maintains a 35-point lead over runner-up Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, 50.3% to 14.8%. The remaining candidates, all in the single digits, include debate-attendees entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy at 9.2%, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley at 5.6%, former Vice President Mike Pence at 4.4%, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie at 3.6%, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott at 3.0%, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson at 0.7%, and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum at 0.7%.

To qualify for the first debate, candidates met polling and donor requirements. Now, the criteria for the second Republican primary debate will increase. Candidates need to hit at least 3% in two national polls or 3% in one national poll and 3% in two early nominating states, including Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, or Nevada. Furthermore, each candidate must have at least 50,000 unique donors and 200 of those 50,000 must be from 20 states or territories. The threshold increase to qualify for the debate will likely reduce the number of qualifying candidates.

While the 2024 presidential election remains a year away, primary states will hold early nomination contests for the Republican nominee in a few months. However, currently, the debates serve as a competition for who can come in second place to Trump.
