(TheConservativeTimes.org) – Hollywood actor and famous Marvel movie star Robert Downey Jr. recently made an incendiary remark about humanity. According to the entertainer, the world should be a “matriarchy,” or a world ruled by women, because “men start wars.”
The actor made the comment during an interview with the Associated Press after filming the movie “Oppenheimer.” The interviewer asked for his thoughts about “patriarchy and war,” to which he replied that because “men start wars,” the entire planet should be a matriarchy.
Downey Jr. further explained that he was drawn to “Oppenheimer,” a movie about J. Robert Oppenheimer (played by actor Cillian Murphy), who invented the atomic bomb and managed the Manhattan Project. This top-secret American military project saw the eventual dropping of two nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, ending World War II.
The movie, directed by Christopher Nolan, is set to release on July 21. The film is expected to be a massive departure from Downey Jr.’s usual role as a lead actor, such as his portrayal of Tony Stark, the character behind the mask of Iron Man in the Marvel movies. This was also his first movie since his Marvel days where he played a supporting role, saying that it was “nice to have the pressure off” and allow Cillian Murphy to do the “heavy lifting” for a change.
The movie also features other well-known actors in its cast, such as Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh.
The actor said that “it’s arguable” that the world is less safe now than it was at the height of the Cold War, seemingly implying that nuclear weapons wouldn’t have been developed in the first place if men hadn’t been in charge.
Downey Jr. said further that starring in the movie compelled him to think deeply about “the why,” or reason for the Manhattan Project in the first place. He said that the context for these historical events is “critical” to understanding them.
