(TheConservativeTimes.org) – Former speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi spoke out praising Ronald Reagan for his pro-immigration stance. “Understand this about immigration, the best speech on immigration was by President Ronald Reagan,” said Pelosi.
There are many Democrats who agree with Pelosi in praising Ronald Reagan for his practices as president. However there is also pushback on some policies such as Reagan’s weaknesses on inequality, race, and even the Aids pandemic.
Max Boot, an immigrant from Moscow who lives in Los Angeles and has gained U.S. citizenship, has spoken out about Reagan’s presidency. “He made conservatism cool for a lot of people including me growing up in that decade and all the more so in my case because I was born in the Soviet Union and my family came here and so tended to gravitate towards the right side of the political spectrum,” he said.
He continued, “I loved it when he called the Soviet Union ‘the evil empire’ and stood up for human rights behind the iron curtain. He made me a Republican.”
Boot wrote a book that looked into Reagan’s life and presidency called “Reagan: His Life and Legend.” In the book, Boot explained the similarities and differences between Reagan and Trump’s policies. He spoke out about how Reagan’s policies were more ideological and more pragmatic than people really realize.
He also said that he was pro-immigration, pro-free trade, pro-Nato, and anti-Russian expansionism. He said that he most likely would have supported Ukraine in its battle with Russia, but that he had a different view of America than Trump does.
Boot argued, “Clearly the Republican party has evolved in ways that Reagan could have never anticipated and yet I don’t think you can just say, wow, Trump arrived from Mars and there was no relationship between what he’s saying and doing and previous decades in the Republican party.”
There are similarities between the two such as them both being television hosts, both being actors, and both populists, but Reagan was quite oblivious to some things just as Donald Trump can be.
Boot stated that although they are definitely similar and have similar views, Reagan was not as “crude or crazy” in his ideologies and stories.
