Study Shows Increase in Deaths Due to Dementia

(TheConservativeTimes.org) – The Primary Care Companion for CNS Disorders published a study that showed deaths from Dementia have tripled in just two decades.

In 1999, there were about one hundred and fifty thousand Americans that had died from Dementia. In 2020, this number tripled to over four hundred and fifty thousand people. Every demographic studied shows that the chances of death from Dementia have increased.

The reason that people are dying more from Dementia is because people are living longer and being diagnosed earlier on. Dementia is “the loss of cognitive functioning, such as thinking, remembering, and reasoning, and behavioral abilities to such an extent that it interferes with a person’s daily life and activities.”

A physician with the King Edward Medical University in Pakistan, Mohsan Ali, said, “Age is the most significant risk factor for dementia.” He continued, “However, the increased prevalence of chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity may also be contributing factors.”

The study showed that Dementia deaths have increased the most in women, black adults, and people who live in rural areas. Ali stated that women live longer than men, and there are also genetic factors in women making them more susceptible.

The British medical journal “The Lancet” predicted that there would be over ten million people with Dementia in the United States by 2050.

Leah Croll, MD, neurologist at Maimonides Health in New York, said, “I am most excited about advances in dementia prevention, because we are learning about a number of lifestyle modifications that are both accessible to most of us and effective.”

The Lancet Commission said that addressing fourteen risk factors could prevent forty five percent of people’s Dementia cases.

Some lifestyle changes that increase the chances of Dementia are less education, physical inactivity, head injury, smoking, high blood pressure, alcohol consumption, obesity, diabetes, and depression, among many other lifestyle changes.
