(TheConservativeTimes.org) – On Tuesday, Taiwan issued an alert saying that China had launched a “missile” and was warning people against it.
This alert comes in the middle of a high-stress moment between Taiwan and China. Taiwan is preparing for its upcoming election, which China is opposed to resulting in heightened tensions.
The alert, however, was misunderstood and, in English, it read “[Air Raid Alert] Missile flyover Taiwan airspace. Be aware.” This mistake led people to believe that there was a missile sent to Taiwan causing worry, but it was a translation mistake that caused this.
The mistake caused panic since it was lost in translation and read as “missile”, however in Chinese it referred to the flying object as a Chinese “satellite”. Either way, Taiwan’s foreign minister spoke about it being a “pattern of harassment.”
The Long March-2C rocket, carrying the Einstein Probe satellite, was sent off from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center on January 9th, prompting this alert to officials of Taiwan.
As the Taiwanese election approaches this Saturday, the stakes are heightened since China is against Taiwan exercising any kind of sovereignty. So, Taiwan is keeping a close eye on its air defense to ensure nothing slips by.
Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu got the alert in the middle of a press conference; he checked his phone, confirmed it was a satellite, and told the journalists not to worry, and then continued with his conference.
Although this has been deemed a satellite, Taiwan still sees it as a case of harassment as they are approaching an election that could separate Taiwan from China, for good. China, on the other hand, wants to keep Taiwan under its control as it’s just outside of its coast and was originally a part of China. This election will determine the verdict on that.
