The AI Industry Educates Congress From Corporate Perspective

(TheConservativeTimes.org) – The artificial intelligence industry has gone into a lobbying binge over the past few years. Artificial intelligence has become extremely popular and many industries, like healthcare, defense, and financial services, are adopting the technology.

As artificial intelligence continues to become more popular lawmakers are leaning on the expertise of lobbyists. These lobbyists are interacting a lot with lawmakers and staffers as they advise them on the ins and outs of the technology.

The issue has arisen that legislation hasn’t been put out yet to regulate artificial intelligence because of the complexity of the technology. As a result, lawmakers have leaned heavily on lobbyists to give them information about the technology to better regulate it.

A study was done by Open Secrets, a watchdog that tracks money in politics, and the results showed that the number of organizations lobbying on AI spiked almost two hundred percent. The groups that are behind this are among the top corporations that are a huge part of the AI boom, including business networks from the Chamber of Commerce and the Business Roundtable for corporations like Microsoft and Amazon.

There are multiple issues that can be associated with the technology simply because artificial intelligence touches so many areas like healthcare, security, and others; disinformation is also a huge risk in many of these fields.

They are leaning toward a European-style regulation for artificial intelligence. The European Union just announced the first regulations of their kind with the Artificial Intelligence Act, and these AI companies are looking to take on the same kind of regulations that the EU enacted.

Representative Don Beyer, a Virginia Democrat focused on AI, said, “The constant theme is don’t do what the EU has done. The throwaway line is, ‘The EU is a regulatory superpower. I haven’t heard anyone sticking up for the EU yet.”
