Sgt. Stanley was injured while participating in a U.S. military operation to establish a temporary aid pier on the coast of Gaza.
The pier was part of a broader effort to allow humanitarian aid deliveries into the Palestinian territory as Israel was delaying land shipments.
Announced by Biden in March, the ill-fated project was plagued with problems from the start.
Despite warnings from federal aid workers, the administration pushed forward with the pier construction.
The pier operation faced repeated weather-related issues and was ultimately terminated in mid-July, just two months after its installation.
During its brief 20-day operational period, the pier delivered aid to only about 450,000 Palestinians, falling drastically short of its intended goal of reaching 1.5 million people.
Sgt. Stanley was one of three U.S. military personnel who sustained non-combat injuries during the pier operation on May 23.
While the other two suffered minor injuries, Stanley’s condition was critical. He was transferred to a long-term care facility, where he tragically died of his injuries.
