(TheConservativeTimes.org) – Highlighting the horrifying extent of the devastation, a local revealed she “could hear” the massive storm system that created a series of tornadoes across the southern United States.
The alarming event left a trail of complete destruction and killed at least four people in its path.
Athens spokeswoman Holly Hollman said, “I stepped out on my porch and I could hear it roar.”
“I think we are extremely lucky that we got hit late at night. If it had hit during the busy hours, I think we might have had some injuries and possibly some fatalities,” she added.
Meteorologists described this powerful weather event as uncommon for this time of year.
The destructive storm system tore through Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia, with at least 45 reported tornadoes.
In the Houston area, at least five confirmed tornadoes killed an individual and caused extensive damage to homes and buildings.
National Weather Service meteorologist Frank Pereira highlighted the unusual nature of this weather event.
He stated, “It’s not unheard of, but it is fairly uncommon to have a severe weather outbreak of this magnitude this late in the year.”
The storm system also had a widespread impact that extended beyond the immediate destruction the tornadoes caused.
Over 40,000 people in Mississippi alone were without power, and additional outages were reported in Texas, Alabama, North Carolina, and Georgia.
In North Carolina, a 70-year-old man was tragically killed when a tree fell on his truck. Roads in the state were closed due to high winds.
The severe weather also wreaked havoc on air travel, with over 600 delays reported at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport alone.
