(TheConservativeTimes.org) – President-elect Donald Trump is taking a bold stand against federal employee telework: you either go back to the office or you will get fired.
This move challenges the Biden administration’s cozy deal with unions and seeks to slash government waste.
In short, Trump’s plan could see over a million federal workers lose their jobs if they refuse to comply.
Trump has declared war on the widespread remote work practices in the federal government, criticizing a recent agreement that allows millions of employees to work from home.
The president-elect sees this as a wasteful gift to unions at the expense of American taxpayers.
“If people don’t come back to work, come back into the office, they’re going to be dismissed,” Trump stated firmly.
Trump also plans to take legal action to overturn the Biden administration’s telework policies, which he views as a blow to government efficiency.
To spearhead this effort, Trump has tapped business titans Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a new Department of Government Efficiency.
Their mission is to slash a staggering $2 trillion from the federal budget. A key strategy to achieve this goal is eliminating work-from-home policies, which have become the norm since the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Requiring federal employees to come to the office five days a week would result in a wave of voluntary terminations that we welcome: If federal employees don’t want to show up, American taxpayers shouldn’t pay them for the Covid-era privilege of staying home,” the duo said.
The scale of this potential shake-up is massive. According to recent data, nearly half of the federal workforce is eligible for at least part-time remote work.
An Office of Management and Budget report reveals that approximately 1.1 million federal employees can work remotely part-time, with an additional 280,000 in fully remote positions.
Trump’s plan could result in firing over one million federal employees who fail to meet the five-day in-office requirement.
This hard-line approach aligns with Musk’s policies at Tesla and SpaceX, where he mandated employees to work at least 40 hours a week in the office.
The president-elect’s fight against remote work is just one part of his broader agenda to streamline government and boost American industry.
Trump has pledged to “unleash American energy” by offering expedited permits and approvals for businesses investing massive amounts in the United States.
“Any business that invests $1 billion or more in the United States will be eligible for fully expedited permits and approvals, including environmental approvals from the federal government,” Trump said.
