(TheConservativeTimes.org) – Disease experts have spoken out saying that many people are not taking the proper precautions against COVID-19 amid the summer wave. They said that people aren’t taking it seriously enough and that they aren’t getting vaccinated or using antiviral drugs when sick.
Epidemiologists have said that although symptoms of this wave aren’t as serious, the virus still remains a threat mostly for older adults and people with underlying health issues.
Public health officials have urged people to get a booster vaccine now and to take a rapid test if they find that they are sick. They also said that they should ask for antiviral treatments from their doctors, if they find that they are sick.
Jennifer Nuzzo, an epidemiologist and director of the Pandemic Center at the Brown University School of Public Health, said, “There is a ton of COVID out there.”
“If you’re experiencing any kind of symptoms, test yourself because you might benefit from getting medicine. At the very least, you can learn that you’re infected and stay home so you don’t give it to other people.”
Viral wastewater in the United States is almost twice as high as the same time last year at the peak of last year’s summer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Nuzzo added, “Every time someone gets sick, there is always a risk involved, but the fact that we haven’t seen a massive upswing in hospitalizations or deaths is what ultimately we look at because this virus isn’t going away.”
Justin Lessler, an epidemiology professor at the University of North Carolina has said that the reason for this increase is because of new strains that have “run away from our immune system a little faster than we expected,” and because people are less cautious about the virus than in previous years.
