(TheConservativeTimes.org) – In an alarming update, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported a staggering increase in norovirus outbreaks across the United States this winter.
Cases almost doubled in less than a month, hitting 91 reported outbreaks in early December, up from 69 in late November.
Norovirus, often called the “winter vomiting bug,” is a highly contagious illness that causes sudden and violent vomiting and diarrhea.
It is the leading cause of foodborne illness in the U.S., responsible for a whopping 58% of cases every year.
The virus spreads easily through direct contact with infected individuals or by consuming contaminated food, water or touching contaminated surfaces.
It is particularly dangerous in confined spaces like cruise ships, nursing homes, schools and prisons.
What’s even more concerning is that the actual number of norovirus cases is likely much higher than reported.
The CDC admits that individual norovirus cases are not required to be reported, and only 15 states participate in the National Outbreak Reporting System.
The impact of this outbreak is severe. Each year, norovirus causes 19-21 million illnesses, about 109,000 hospitalizations, and 900 deaths in the U.S.
It affects the most vulnerable citizens, like children under five and seniors over 85, the worst. For instance, it leads to nearly a million pediatric medical visits each year.
In response to the outbreaks, the CDC recommends basic hygiene practices like handwashing and staying home when sick.
