(TheConservativeTimes.org) – Last month, the Transport of London posted a job listing for a paid internship that limited applicants to those of “non-white heritage,” prompting blowback on social media.
Transport for London was seeking applicants with a background in communications, public relations, media, and marketing for an internship paying £21,824. Under the heading “What you’ll need” in the job notice, applicants were told that they must be from a “minority ethnic background” like black, Asian, Afro-Caribbean, or another “non-white heritage.”
Unsurprisingly, the race requirement prompted outrage from right-leaning UK politicians, including Nigel Farage, the former Brexit leader who is now a host on GB News. In responding to the job listing on Twitter, Farage exclaimed, “End racist adverts!”
Actor Laurence Fox, the founder of the UK’s Reclaim Party, asked in a tweet how the media would respond to a job listing that included, “blacks need not apply.” Fox suggested that such a requirement would cause “justifiable outrage from every corner of the insipid media.” He added that it was galling that white people are accused of privilege when what they are is “persecuted.”
Scottish comedian Leo Kearse, another regular on GB News, tweeted that there is systemic racism “and it’s anti-white.”
The Transport of London’s job listing was posted shortly after a job listing for a teaching position from the Glasgow City Council was removed from its website. This followed Leo Kearse blasting the council for restricting the position to “minority ethnic” applicants only. The Glasgow City Council claimed the listing had been posted online “by mistake” due to an administrative error.
However, the City Council maintained that making the teaching position available only to non-white applicants was in keeping with its commitment to increase diversity among its teaching staff in a way that is allowed under Scotland’s equity laws.
Kearse accused the Scottish government of racism, noting that it excludes white applicants in a country that is 96 percent white.
