(TheConservativeTimes.org) – Showcasing the resounding success of its breeding program, The Metro Richmond Zoo brings Americans joy with the birth of an adorable pygmy hippopotamus.
Iris, a female pygmy hippopotamus at the Metro Richmond Zoo, gave birth to a healthy female calf.
Iris carried her calf for seven months before giving birth. This is Iris’ third offspring with her mate, Corwin.
The newborn calf weighed 15 pounds at birth, marking the third hippo birth at the zoo in the past five years.
“Most people don’t get a hippopotamus for Christmas at all, so we feel lucky to have received two over the years,” zoo officials jokingly stated.
Pygmy hippos are an endangered species native to West Africa. Only about 2,500 mature individuals remain in the wild.
Unlike their larger relatives, pygmy hippos are typically solitary or found in pairs.
Therefore, the Metro Richmond Zoo’s breeding program is crucial in maintaining the species’ genetic diversity and ensuring its survival.
The zoo’s commitment to conservation is evident in its responsible management of the pygmy hippo population.
Iris’ previous calves have been relocated to other zoological facilities to support conservation efforts.
