Highlighting the escalating dangers law enforcement officers face every day, a South Carolina deputy was ambushed and killed during an arrest attempt.
Deputy Devin Mason was just 27 years old and had recently graduated from the academy when he lost his life.
The deadly ambush occurred in Lamar, South Carolina, when Darlington County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call about a wanted person.
Upon entering the home to make the arrest, officers were immediately ambushed by gunfire, resulting in Deputy Mason’s death and injuries to another officer, who is now in stable condition.
Cameron Dennett, the 25-year-old suspect who opened fire on the deputies, was killed during the exchange.
Despite being legally prohibited from possessing a firearm, Dennett was armed and ready to attack officers rather than face justice for his crimes.
These included criminal conspiracy, forgery, and computer crime charges related to bank fraud.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has taken over the investigation of the incident.
It marks the first time in over three years that a South Carolina police officer has been shot and killed in the line of duty.
A 28-year-old female suspect was taken into custody unharmed during the incident.
She was wanted on similar charges and believed to be working with Dennett in a scheme to defraud victims using stolen bank account information.
The pair had been using bank routing and account numbers to commit financial crimes against law-abiding citizens.
“Deputy Mason served the people of Darlington County with heart and honor. Though his time with us was far too short, his impact will not be forgotten,” said Sheriff Michael August.
Deputy Mason had only recently completed his field training after graduating from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy earlier this year.
His promising career was cut tragically short by a criminal who chose violence, demonstrating once again how the brave men and women in blue put their lives on the line every day to protect communities.
Sheriff August’s department is mourning the loss of their brother in blue while continuing to serve their community with unwavering dedication.
This tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers and their families, who never know if their loved ones will return home at the end of their shift.
