Right in the middle of a massive crackdown on illegal immigration, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem had to be rushed to a hospital in Washington, D.C.
The secretary, who has been leading President Donald Trump’s historic deportation efforts, requested an ambulance herself while returning from confronting riots in Los Angeles.
Secret Service agents stood guard as the former South Dakota governor received emergency medical care after suffering a sudden allergic reaction.
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin reported Noem to be “alert and recovering” and stated the secretary was transported “out of an abundance of caution.”
The cause of the allergic reaction remains unknown, with officials providing few details about what triggered the medical emergency for one of President Trump’s most visible cabinet members.
The hospitalization came at a critical moment for the Department of Homeland Security.
Noem had just returned from Los Angeles, where she was addressing violent protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) nationwide crackdown on illegal immigration.
A planned press conference in New York City regarding REAL ID implementation had to be postponed due to her medical situation.
Since her confirmation in January following President Trump’s second term victory, Noem has been a central figure in the administration’s border security and immigration enforcement efforts.
She leads a department with about 260,000 employees handling various security and enforcement tasks.
She has personally participated in federal immigration raids, including one in New York City shortly after taking office.
“My dear friend @Sec_Noem, our fearless Secretary of Homeland Security, was just rushed to the hospital,” wrote Bruce LeVell, former Executive Director of President Donald Trump’s National Diversity Coalition.
“My heart is with her during this challenging time, but I know her strength and determination will shine through. Please join me in keeping Kristi in your prayers for a swift and full recovery,” he added.
Noem has been in the headlines recently after an incident where U.S. Senator Alex Padilla was forcibly removed from her Los Angeles press conference by federal law enforcement agents.
The Secret Service “thought he was an attacker,” according to Homeland Security officials, leading to his removal and temporary handcuffing.
Homeland Security later criticized Padilla’s approach as “disrespectful political theater.”
The former governor has become known for her direct approach to immigration enforcement, appearing in commercials urging illegal aliens to leave the United States.
She has also actively supported President Trump’s promise to conduct the largest deportation operation in American history.
Her unapologetic stance on border security has made her both a hero to conservatives and a target for the left.
This incident follows another security concern earlier this year when Noem’s purse was stolen. It contained cash, personal identification, and her Homeland Security badge.
A suspect was arrested and charged with aggravated identity theft, robbery, and fraud in connection with the theft.
