Highlighting the lingering dangers faced by law enforcement at the southern border, a heavily armed gunman launched a brazen attack on a Border Patrol facility.
Ryan Louis Mosqueda, a 27-year-old Michigan man, unleashed dozens of rounds at the federal building in McAllen, Texas, before being neutralized by responding officers.
This attack raises serious questions about the security of border enforcement facilities as the Trump administration addresses the border crisis.
The shooting erupted at the U.S. Border Patrol sector annex near McAllen International Airport.
Mosqueda, equipped with tactical gear and multiple weapons, opened fire on the building and agents inside.
Swift action by law enforcement prevented what could have been a massacre, as police returned fire and killed the attacker before he could breach the building’s entrance.
McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez reported that Mosqueda fired “many dozens of rounds” during the attack.
The attack left three people injured: two officers and a Border Patrol employee.
One officer, a 10-year veteran of the McAllen Police Department, was shot in the knee during the exchange of gunfire.

Mosqueda’s background presents troubling questions. He had no known criminal record but had been reported missing from Weslaco, Texas, just hours before the shooting.
His Michigan-tagged vehicle, found at the scene, contained additional weaponry and ammunition.
It also featured undecipherable spray-painted lettering, all of which amounts to possible evidence of pre-planning and radical intentions.
“Incidents like these make us realize that we’ve to always be on guard to keep our community safe,” stated Chief Rodriguez.
While authorities have not yet classified the attack as terrorism, the FBI has taken over the investigation.
The incident caused significant disruption, forcing temporary closures of roads near McAllen airport and delaying all flights at the international terminal.
Law enforcement officials believe there are no further threats related to this incident.
The attack comes at a time when Border Patrol agents diligently work to prevent criminals from entering the U.S.
