Human Rights Watch Speculates on Gaza Hospital Bombing

( – The Human Rights Watch has released a report on the bombing of the al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza last October 17 that point to the cause likely being a misfire from munitions “commonly used by Palestinian armed groups.”

Prior to the release of the report, the Ministry of Health in Gaza and other pro-Palestinian sympathizers and groups in the U.S. and other countries have pointed to Israel as the culprit for the bombing, which the Gaza Ministry of Health says killed 471 people.

However, even the number of casualties released by the Gaza’s health ministry was called into question by the report. Human Rights Watch said that the number had a “unusually high killed-to-injured ratio” and was “higher than other estimates” of casualties for the incident. U.S. intelligence estimates that fatalities in the incident ranged at the low end of the 100 to 300 spectrum”.

In addition, the report also pointed out that Gaza Ministry of Health’s tally of casualties were “out of proportion with the damage visible on site.”

The Human Rights Watch report said that it came to its conclusions based on a review of publicly available videos and photos, as well as analyzing satellite imagery, interviewing witnesses, and consulting experts. The organization also took a look at analyses published by other organizations.

However, the report also indicated a need for a deeper investigation into the incident, given the inability of both Israeli and Palestinian officials to “credibly and impartially investigate” incidents where international humanitarian laws are allegedly violated.

The Human Rights Watch report – which comes from an organization that has a long history of issuing anti-Israeli sentiments – has been met with silence from many U.S. politicians who similarly immediately laid responsibility for the hospital bombing at Israel’s feet. Democratic representatives Rashida Tlaib from Michigan and Ilhan Omar from Minnesota have yet to take down their posts on social media that blame Israel for the bombing.
