(TheConservativeTimes.org) – Donald Trump, the former United States president, is currently on trial in New York for a civil lawsuit after being accused of fraud and misrepresentation.
Donald Trump, Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr, and other top Trump Organization executives are accused of “numerous acts of fraud and misrepresentation.” They are being accused by New York Attorney General Letitia James, and she is claiming that they have collectively used fraud and other misrepresentations to grow Trump’s net worth.
This trial comes after a previous trial where they determined that there were “fraudulent variations” when it comes to Trump’s assets, and this trial will help to determine what disciplinary actions will follow.
So far, Donald Trump has denied any wrongdoing and states that he is an “innocent man.”
The Judge decided that Trump would no longer be allowed to deliver his own closing statements as he was worried about the possibility of him making things worse. Before the hearing, Trump was seen outside the courthouse saying “I want to make the summation. At this moment, the judge is not letting me make the summation because I’ll bring up things that he doesn’t want to hear.”
Trump’s lawyer began his closing statement by speaking on the lack of validity of the case, and how there is limited evidence to even charge Trump in the first place. He says that this lawsuit was “manufactured to pursue a political agenda.”
His attorney continued by claiming that the Attorney General has no case to back this up and that she simply is doing it because she “doesn’t like Trump.” He also stated that going along with this lawsuit would ruin corporate real estate in New York and that it would affect much more than just Trump.
At the end of his closing statement, Trump’s lawyer asked for the judge to reconsider and allow Trump to speak. However, the judge stated that Trump would need to stay within the same rules as lawyers would and state “only facts and nothing political.”
When Trump’s lawyer asked him if he would be willing to speak within the guidelines set by the judge, Trump had already started speaking, immediately disobeying the judge’s orders.
“Well, I think, your honor, this case goes outside the facts,” Trump began, “The financial statements were perfect. The banks got all their money back. They were as happy as can be.” He continued, “I’m an innocent man. I’ve been persecuted by someone running for office.”
The judge stated that this was exactly what he didn’t want and pushed his attorney to “control his client.” After the court was dismissed, Trump gave a statement to the press outside the courthouse. “It’s been a pretty successful trial,” he said, “I don’t know that we’re going to get a fair ruling. But everybody knows what I just said. This is a sham and it’s a shame.”
