Alabama Bill Would Ban Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Programs

(TheConservativeTimes.org) – Kay Ivey, Alabama Governor, signed a bill that would ban diversity, equity, and inclusion in all schools, including public schools and universities, as well as state agencies.

The legislation is to prevent the teaching of “divisive talks” including teaching or discussing topics that might make someone feel guilty about their race or gender. Republicans have said that these DEI programs are deepening divisions and pushing a specific political view. On the opposing side, some say that these programs help people to feel included and represented, whereas removing them would be a step backwards.

“My administration has and will continue to value Alabama’s rich diversity, however, I refuse to allow a few bad actors on college campuses – or wherever else for that matter – to go under the acronym of DEI, using taxpayer funds, to push their liberal political movement counter to what the majority of Alabamians believe,” said Governor Ivey.

Alongside this, they have pushed for legislation that would ban the talk of sexual orientation or gender identity in public schools. According to Anthony Daniels, Alabama House Minority Leader, this is a step back, saying, “This regressive measure undermines the strides we’ve made in cultivating an inclusive society in Alabama by stifling essential discussions and programs that are key to improving our state.”

He continued to say that it impacts the educational experiences of students by removing them from these programs that help them to feel included and to receive support.

The bill says that the eight divisive concepts include those that say “any individual should accept, acknowledge, affirm, or assent to a sense of guilt, complicity, or a need to apologize based on his or her race, color, religion, sex, ethnicity, or national origin. They also said that topics that fault, blame, or bias should be assigned to people based on race, religion, gender, or national origin are also considered divisive.
