(TheConservativeTimes.org) – The Francis Scott Key Bridge in the United States city of Baltimore collapsed into the water due to a collision with a cargo ship.
Search and rescue efforts were halted after rescue personnel were having difficulties searching in the water, calling it “dangerous conditions.” The six workers were presumed dead after the search rescue was called off.
Coastguard Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath presented the grim news, saying, “At this point, we do not believe we are going to find any of these individuals still alive.” With this said the police did say that they were going to make the divers return the following day to retrieve the deceased remains.
Authorities said that the cargo ship crashed into the bridge early around one in the morning and it caught fire upon impact.
When the crash initially happened, authorities called it a mass casualty event until they realized that some people had fallen into the water. Upon investigating they found that two people had fallen into the water and they were rescued.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott said, “It looked like something out of an action movie.” He continued to call it “an unthinkable tragedy.”
President Joe Biden spoke out saying that he’d be heading to Baltimore as soon as he could and he would be asking Congress for federal funds to rebuild the bridge as it was an important part of the American commute holding over thirty thousand cars daily.
“This is going to take some time,” The President said in regards to the rebuilding efforts. “The people of Baltimore can count on us, though, to stick with them at every step of the way until the port is reopened and the bridge is rebuilt.”
The crash, according to Biden, didn’t look like it was intentional and there was nothing for them to make them believe that it was.
