(TheConservativeTimes.org) – Senator Sherrod Brown has urged President Joe Biden to ban Chinese-made electric vehicles in the United States. Brown, chair of the Senate Banking Committee, said, “Chinese electric vehicles are an existential threat to the American auto industry.”
Other officials have stated the potential threat of allowing Chinese electric vehicles into the United States. Still, others have suggested higher tariffs for them, but Sherrod Brown is the first to suggest a full ban on the products.
In a video post on X, Senator Brown made his case to the public, saying, “We cannot allow China to bring its government-backed cheating to the American auto industry.”.
President Biden said that they “could flood our market with its vehicles, posing risks to our national security” but he continued to say that he wouldn’t let that happen on his watch.
There could be restrictions put on the cars which would eliminate the risk of the vehicles being able to collect sensitive data from American drivers. Washington warned that vehicles like this “regularly use their cameras and sensors to record detailed information on US infrastructure; interact directly with critical infrastructure; and can be piloted or disabled remotely”.
China is the world’s largest producer of cars and there has been a huge competition between China’s electric car company BYD and Tesla in the United States.
China’s Vice Finance Minister, Liao Min, has expressed concern over the restrictions and tariffs that have been put on Chinese vehicles. The Chinese-American trading and business relationship stays tense even after America’s biggest airlines asked Biden to stop approvals of new flights between China and the U.S.
“If the growth of the Chinese aviation market is allowed to continue unchecked and without concern for equality of access in the market, flights will continue to be relinquished to Chinese carriers at the expense of US workers and businesses,” said Anthony Blinken.
